Maldives – A Popular Surfing Destination!

Maldives is a beautiful country with pristine water and many reefs which is perfect for vacations. And so it became popular among surfers as a surfing destination.  The best way to experience the diverse breaks Maldives has to offer would be taking a surf cruise. North and South Male’ Atolls offer the most known surfs, from the tourism atolls. Some resorts on the eastern reef of the atoll also provide surfing.

Likewise, surfing cruises are available, giving you the chance to test some of the less recognized surfs in the atolls further away from central zones.  And some provide charters for Southern Atolls in cruise yachts too.

The surf season runs from mid February to November which coincides with the south-west monsoon, when the best swells are created by winter low pressure systems in the southern Indian Ocean. A mixture of excellent surfing and weather conditions are seen in March and April.

Maldives has become one of the heavenly world surfing destinations as it has hosted international surfing competitions. Hence, there is no doubt that the Maldives is an extremely popular destination among professional surfers.

You would be amazed by the best surf spots for surfing that Maldives has to offer. Exclusively chartered cruises for your surf trip are provided most of the times. Also, even if you are a single surfer open boat cruise can sometimes be arranged for you.

Surfing areas: One of the well-known surfing spots in the Maldives would be the Pasta Point. It is a long peeling left with exclusive access to ‘Thari’ Village. Five miles away you find the Honkys (a long wrapping left and is reputed to be the best wave in the Maldives) and Sultans (a right with barrels).

Rising to 8-10 feet during the surf monsoon, the average size of reef breakers is 4-5 feet. From late February to mid November is the surf monsoon. The best waves comes in during March to May and then again in Sep till the end of November. The water is quite shallow on the surf and the coral beds sharp and protruding, therefore reef breakers are sometimes quite tricky to surf. Most of the times due to the availability of very few good equipments, it is better that the surfers bring all their equipment with them. Then, you can be totally and absolutely satisfied and enjoy the trip to its fullest.
